About redirect
Redirection occurs when a web server sends a visitor from one web page to another web page. The Redirects interface allows you to send all of the visitors of a domain or particular page to a different URL. A common use of redirection is to create shorter, easy-to-remember URLs that redirect to longer URLs. It is also used to redirect visitors from old pages on a website to the new and updated web pages. A domain redirection may be temporary, permanent, wildcard etc.
Now, let’s go about how to create a redirect in cPanel:
Adding a redirect
- Log in to cPanel.
- Click on Redirects icon under Domains section.
- The Redirects interface will load and be displayed as shown.From the Type drop-down menu, select the type of redirect you wish to use.
- Permanent (301): this redirect type will update the visitor’s bookmarks and direct search engines to the new site.
- Temporary (302): this redirect type will redirect the visitor or search engine but will not update the bookmark, and search engines will continue to index to the original page.
- In the http://(www.)? field, select the domain you wish redirect or select **All Public Domains if you wish to redirect all the domains controlled by your cPanel. If you wish to redirect a particular directory, enter the name in the available text box next to the slash.
- In the Redirects to field, enter the URL you wish to redirect visitors to.
- In the www.Redirection, select one of the options.
- Only redirect with www. — with this option, only visitors who enter the
www
as part of the URL will be redirected. - Redirect with or without www. — with this option, all visitors are redirected, whether they enter the
www.
prefix before the domain name part of the URL. - Do Not Redirect www. — with this option, visitors who enter the
www.
prefix before the the domain name part of the URL will be directed.
- Only redirect with www. — with this option, only visitors who enter the
- Check the Wildcard Redirect checkbox if you wish to redirect all files within a directory to the same filename in the new directory.
- Then click Add.
Removing a redirect
To remove a redirect, follow these steps:
- Go to the Redirects interface by clicking on Redirecting icon under the Domains section.
- Under the Remove section, click the “X” button corresponding to the redirect that you wish to remove.
- On the next page, click Remove Redirect to confirm the removal of this redirect.
